General Machine-Diecron, Inc.
Jim Reynolds is the engineering manager at General Machine-Diecron in Griffin, Georgia. He has three engineers and three programmers in his group. The company is a vendor for several major government contractors, sometimes recreating drawings they send, and sometimes reverse engineering parts. "We are an aircraft repair station, providing parts to several major air carriers," Jim states. These parts include landing gear, airframe and fuel system parts. Some of these are for repair only and some have to be recreated from scratch.
General Machine-Diecron had been running Unigraphics for eight or nine years. According to Jim, the company quit paying maintenance several years back. "Sometimes you feel like you're getting something for it, but most of the time you don't. When I came here, I was going to put in four seats of SolidWorks -- it is a great program. But it's difficult to explain or justify $25,000, plus $1,375 per year times three, or four or five seats. SolidWorks, SolidEdge and Inventor are all good programs; I've used all of them. But I saw the ad for
Alibre Design and purchased it out of my own pocket so that we could try it here. I am very pleased with how Alibre Design handles. It's a lot like SolidWorks, although it doesn't have all the bells and whistles."
Jim has been especially impressed with the service from Alibre. "Everybody at Alibre has been really good. I can't say enough good things about Scott and Camey. I have done a couple of team sessions with Scott for training, but also to get his help on parts I was modeling. One time I had trouble adding a fillet to a part. I shared my repository with Scott, and he accessed the part and worked on it for me. Then he called to let me know he was finished, so I opened the part and looked at the work he had done to add the fillet. All the people I have talked to have been extremely helpful."
Jim just added two more seats of Alibre Design for the other engineers on his staff. "I feel confident that, with two more seats of Alibre Design, I can turn it over to the other engineers here and they'll have no real problems, even though they have no experience in solids. I know that they have help online from Alibre anytime they need it."
With experience using most of the popular CAD applications on the market, Jim's decision to go with Alibre Design
means a lot. But it seemed to be an easy one for him to make: "Alibre Design beats AutoCAD hands down -- there's no comparison. Even Mechanical Desktop, too. I feel like you have a great product. For the price, you can't beat it."
